How to buy a prepaid electricity token online in Nigeria

Queuing at a vending point to recharge a prepaid meter is no longer necessary anywhere in Nigeria. Every one of the eleven distribution companies now supports online vending, and a token bought online is identical to one bought at a kiosk — the same 20 digits, generated by the same DISCO system.

What you need before you start

• Your meter number. Printed on the meter itself, usually 11 or 13 digits. Read it off the meter, not from memory — a single wrong digit sends your money to a stranger's meter and it cannot be reversed.
• Your DISCO. The distribution company for your area. If you are unsure, the name is on any old bill.
• Your meter type. Prepaid returns a token. Postpaid credits your account and returns a receipt instead.

Buying it

1. Open Buy Electricity and choose your DISCO.
2. Enter your meter number and tap Validate. The registered name and address come back from the DISCO.
3. Check that name. This is the single most important step. If it isn't you or your landlord, stop.
4. Enter an amount. Your confirmation screen itemises the service fee and VAT before you commit.
5. Pay from your wallet or by card. The token appears on screen, and is emailed and texted to you.

Why the name check matters

Meter numbers are sequential in many estates, so a mistyped digit frequently lands on a real, active meter belonging to a real neighbour. Once a token is vended against that meter it belongs to them. No DISCO will reverse it, and neither can we — the units have already been issued. Validation exists precisely so you catch this before any money moves.

Saving time next time

Save the meter under Meters with a nickname like "Shop" or "Mum". After that a recharge is two taps: pick the meter, enter an amount. Every future purchase skips validation entirely.

Common questions

Does a token expire?

No. The receipt stays in your purchase history permanently and shows the full token whenever you need it.

Can I buy for someone else's meter?

Yes. Validate their meter number, confirm the name that comes back is theirs, and buy. Send them the token by any means you like.

What if the DISCO is down?

Check DISCO Status first. If yours shows red, wait rather than retrying — repeated attempts during an outage are the main cause of double charges.
